Every one of the 1,797 handwritten digits our network never saw during training, one column each, sorted 0 to 9. Each row is one of its 32 hidden neurons: cyan the first layer, lime the second. Brighter means firing harder. Move across the strip to see a digit and its neurons. Draw your own and watch its column slide into place.
A real network, 64 inputs, two hidden layers of 16, ten outputs, 1,482 numbers in all, trained by our script on 3,823 digits from the UCI handwritten digits set. On these 1,797 unseen digits it is right of the time. Everything you see is computed in this page, right now, from those 1,482 numbers.
Columns are sorted by the true digit. Each block has its own stripe pattern: that pattern is what "looks like a 7" means inside the network.
